Barca struggling ahead of must-win Chelsea match

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Still recovering from a morale-busting loss at home in the Spanish league, Barcelona will need to quickly regroup to beat Chelsea and overturn a first leg deficit in the Champions League semifinals.

The defending champions in both Spain and Europe lost to Real Madrid 2-1 on Saturday and now trail their biggest rivals by seven points with four games to go. Last week, the Catalan team lost at Chelsea 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals.

Barcelona could lose three straight matches for the first time since 2003, staining a season in which it has already won the Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and Club World Cup. The team is also in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.

"It's very easy to speak about the end of a cycle but I think this team, which has won 13 titles in three years, deserves a lot of credit despite losing one game," Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said on Monday. "Others have to win the titles first before we start talking about a changing of the guard. We deserve more respect than that."

Chelsea is unbeaten in its last six meetings with Barcelona, but goalkeeper Petr Cech said the Spanish team's recent stumbles won't make it any easier.

"I don't think that them losing the 'clasico' will have a big impact," said Cech. "(Barcelona) is a great team with the experience to handle defeats. It will make them eager to forget about the 'clasico' and focus on the Champions League."

Messi was bottled up by both Chelsea and Madrid to remain scoreless in his last two outings, and when he did manage to set up his teammates, they failed to finish.

Against Madrid, the three-time world player of the year didn't even manage a shot on goal, something almost unimaginable for the club's all-time leading scorer who already has 63 goals this season.

Messi did not practice on Sunday due to a stomach ache but Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said it was nothing serious and defended his star player in the midst of a rare two-game scoring drought.

"I can never be worried about Messi, even if he goes 27 games without scoring a goal," said Guardiola. "One day he scores three goals, the next day he gives assists and creates chances. We have to give him permission not to score.

"Of course he likes to score. He feels responsible for his part in our attack. His leading role has helped us achieve all we have. It is never easy against a team that puts nine or 10 players near the area."

Guardiola's hesitance to renew his contract which expires in the offseason has only added to the growing tension surrounding the game.

But the former Barcelona midfielder said that Tuesday's outcome would "have absolutely nothing" to do with his decision whether to stay.

Chelsea will likely repeat its defensive tactics in an attempt to stop Messi. Even so, the visitors know that they will most likely need to score to go through.

"I hope that we are going to score a goal because a goal will be a big difference. We know from last time when the goal by (Andre) Iniesta made a big difference," Cech said, referring to Iniesta's stoppage-time goal that enabled Barcelona to get past Chelsea in the semifinals in 2008-09 on its way to winning the final.

While Barcelona generated more than enough chances against Chelsea to draw or even win the first leg, it was uncharacteristically sluggish and predictable against Madrid with playmakers Iniesta and Xavi not their usual sharp selves.

"To blame fatigue for defeats is an excuse for losers," said Pique, the Spain international who is looking to return to the lineup after missing the two losses. "When you talk about getting to a Champions League final the word fatigue doesn't exist. Everything is in our hands."

Guardiola can count on Cesc Fabregas and Pique to be fresh after neither played a minute against Madrid.

Pique could play a critical role by starting Barcelona's attacks with his long passing from the back.

Interim manager Roberto Di Matteo said his defensive formation gave Chelsea the best chance to come out on top.

"I think you have to utilize the strength of your players and look for the weakness of your opponent, that is tactics," Di Matteo said. "Barca will create chances against every team, so we will have to try and score a goal tomorrow night. But we also have to try and limit the chances they have against us."

Chelsea arrives in better physical form after resting most of its starters over the weekend. Striker Didier Drogba, who scored from Chelsea's only shot on goal in the first leg, is the team's only major doubt as he tries to recover from a knee injury.

"The game will be similar (to the first leg)," Guardiola said. "They will wait for us to loose the ball so they can attack on the break. Our biggest defensive goal is to be protected at these moments."

The winner will face either Bayern Munich or Madrid in the final on May 19. Madrid hosts the German side on Wednesday looking to come back from a 2-1 loss in the first leg.

Stakes high for United-City derby

The stakes have never been so high for a Manchester derby. United was in control of its own destiny until Sunday's 4-4 draw against Everton tipped the balance toward City, which can now win a first championship since 1968 if it wins its three remaining games.

10 ways to help employees feel less ... - Business Management Daily

by JoAnn Corley

No matter where your organization is located, which field it specializes in, or what its product or service is, your employees are feeling overwhelmed.

Employees who survived the downturn have absorbed work left behind by laid-off co-workers. Most employers are still riding the brakes on hiring. Job descriptions have ex??panded to the breaking point. ?Overwhelmed? is here to stay.

As an HR pro, you might not be able to help employees embrace that sad fact, but you definitely can help them manage it. Here?s how:

1. Look inward. Before you can help employees cope, deal with your own feelings. Most of the HR pros I know are overwhelmed themselves. Especially if you work for a small company, your HR department might be woefully understaffed. Maybe it?s just you! That makes it hard to keep up in the best of times.

2. Don?t deny the fact that employees are overwhelmed. Admit it. Acknowledge it with respect. Tell them: ?I know you?re swamped. We?ve got a lot going on.?

3. Express appreciation. A simple ?thank you? for going the extra mile can defuse a lot of the feelings that work is overwhelming. Someone who feels appreciated might be less resentful, and more willing to make personal sacrifices to help the company get through a hard time.

4. Build a more collaborative environment. Nudge managers to talk about working together to get stuff done. Encourage offers to help one another. Build a ?we?re all in this together? culture.

Example: Walmart employees often huddle for a few minutes at the beginning of a shift to talk about their plans and goals for the day. They even clap and sing together. At a company where I once worked, we had a similar stand-up meeting to share what was on our plates for the day and the outcomes we expected. We also asked for our peers? support and encouragement. Those activities help employees under??stand that all of the pressure for the work isn?t on one person. It helps them feel less alienated and more supported.

5. Be consistently clear about priorities. Employees have so much to do that they can?t figure out what to do first. Encourage regular instructions from managers to staff.

6. Know the priorities. Perhaps employees can?t prioritize because their overwhelmed managers don?t know what?s most important, either. Coach bosses to divide department-wide to-do lists into ?A,? ?B? and ?C? tasks. Train employees the basic time-management skill of plugging the ?A? tasks into their calendars with a reasonable time estimate. That way, everyone will be clear about how much they can get done.

Tip: To determine which are ?A? tasks, ask: What are the consequences if it does not get done? Is someone waiting for it? How important is that person? Who gave it to me to do? How important is that person?

7. Lighten the load. Teasing out the ?A? tasks also forces managers to examine whether the ?B? and ?C? tasks are im??portant enough to devote staff time to at all. Those chores will either percolate to the top and become ?A? tasks, or they won?t. If they?re not priorities, why are they on your list?

?8. Watch for the breaking point. The recession showed us that people can be way more productive than we thought. Still, everyone has a breaking point. At some time, you?ll need to hire more staff.

9. Make time management a core competency for all employees. Incorporate time-management instruction and coaching into employee orientation. Every employee needs it, yet too many organizations leave it to the wind.

10. Listen and coach. Allow employees to honestly ex??press their feelings. Give them time to vent, and then help them develop a plan. That will go a long way to defusing hard feelings and low productivity caused by feeling overwhelmed. It will help employees gain control of their own work.

Managers can help by setting priorities. Employees will feel less like it?s all up to them?and less guilty when they can?t get it all done by themselves. Honor and respect the fact that people are feeling overwhelmed, and those employees will more likely accept it as the new normal?and acknowledge that they can get important work done.

Reasons Why Internet Marketing is So Powerful | FitnessA-Z ...

If you are not comfortable with adelaide carpet cleaners and executing quick and important decisions, then it is critical that you know that ability is indispensable with online marketing and business. It is a fact that a very high percentage of new businesses fail in the first few years. If there is no clue at all as to how to get started in the first place, then welcome to the club and learn to deal with it for a while at least. Bear in mind that millions have gone before you, and you are capable of learning how to cope with new experiences. The issue of mistakes in business need not be only because you are learning and mistakes are to be expected. It is like anything else you start learning, in time the errors will be less and you will be more confident. While you really should always perform due diligence, we have no issue with that when it comes to the methods outlined below. There's no doubt about it: internet marketing has really taken off in recent years. Today, people are feeling more secure about ordering products and services online. At the same time as customers feel more secure, businesses in turn are realizing how profitable online marketing can be. Shopping online is quickly getting to be as normal and commonplace as shopping at the mall; online sales will soon be in the billions. If current trends continue, online marketing will only expand further, making this an ideal time to start your own internet business. Online marketing has already created many millionaires, many of whom now have businesses that practically run themselves. It is necessary to put in the time and hard work to get an internet business off the ground, but in the long run it's well worth it. It's very possible to have your business take off to great heights once you learn the ropes. There aren't many other businesses where you can start out on a shoestring budget and become wealthy in a few short years. The internet is one of the few media where this kind of thing is possible. If you always wanted to get into Internet marketing but something just stopped you, now's the time to actually get into it and make a fortune. You should approach this as an actual business, which is what it is, not some kind of "make money with no work" scam. Internet marketing offers a unique opportunity: this article will look at some of its benefits. One of the biggest advantages of online marketing is that you have the ability to reach your customers any time of the day or night, all year round. Your website does all the hard work for you even when you're away from your computer sleeping or vacationing. It's a truly auto-pilot business. You can set your site to auto-pilot easily, but you can also automate many of your marketing tasks too, from creating articles to draw in more visitors, social bookmarking properties, your newsletter and more. You could have multiple little salespeople working to draw in new customers to your business all the time. Those little individual steps you take towards building your online business will start to show results on their own. The old adage of "the older your business gets, the less work it takes" is equally true for the internet. You'll begin to notice the changes in your website as it progresses and develops into a stronger business that brings in money automatically. The secret to online marketing success is to invest a little time setting it up the right way first and then you have a solid footing to reap the long term results. The internet provides you with almost unlimited resources for learning and staying current with the industry. There are thousands of places online where you can get free information; in addition to the many blogs and websites, you can also subscribe to a variety of free newsletters and ezines. If you don't mind spending a little money, you can also purchase various online courses, ebooks and software that can help your business get off the ground. But there are always many free sources of information for those on a tight budget. Another good source of information are forums on internet marketing; read some of the threads and ask any questions you may have and you'll learn from people who have been at this for a long time. As you are going along and working your business, you will learn new ways to promote your offers; so what you need to do is hypothetically apply them to what you do and see if it is viable. Since we have no idea how you market or what your model is, we do realize that carpet cleaners melbourne could be partially useful or maybe not at all depending on your situation. Just how far do you want to take things online? That is always a valid and important question to ask. But, we tend to believe the universal answer to the question of growth is, yes. It only makes sense that you will want to entertain processes you have not yet used. You have heard about all the shrewd business people who have taken every opportunity that comes across their desk if it would work with what they do in business. In conclusion, there's no reason why you shouldn't try your hand at internet marketing. It will be one of the best decisions you will make. Rest assured, you have just received an introduction about these techniques. Any time you read an article that talks about online marketing methods pertaining to brisbane carpet cleaning or anything else, just assume there is much more to the story. Now what you want to do, or should do, after reading this is go out and find out more. Avoid the trap of staying in book learning mode and constantly moving from one thing to the next. If that scenario is you, then start slowly but be sure you force your self to do something each business day. Start thinking in terms of activities that help you earn or generate profits.

Microsoft updates SkyDrive with support for ODF, Twitter

Image

There's no day like today for the titans of tech to beef up their respective clouds with abandon. First, Google went and updated Chrome's Cloud Print with the convenience of FedEx and now Microsoft's taking a spin at the remote wheel, enhancing its SkyDrive service with support for ODF (Open Document Format) -- an XML-based file type for documents and spreadsheets -- and an increased browser upload cap of 300MB. Twitter also gets a nod or two in this feature refresh, as users entrenched in Redmond's ecosystem will have the ability to share to the social service, in addition to sending out shortened image links. We'd normally advise you to check out the release for more info, but the tech company's kept this missive short and sweet. See for yourself at the source below.

Tupac Hologram May Be Coming To An Arena Near You

Visual-effects house behind the 2-D image tells Wall Street Journal that Dr. Dre has a vision beyond Coachella for his virtual friend.
By Kara Warner

Tupac Shakur has made quite an impact on pop culture since his death in 1996, so we shouldn't be too surprised that his eye-popping and downright magical materialization at the Coachella music festival on Sunday night alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre is dominating the headlines.

The spectacular surprise has caused such a stir that there's a chance we might be seeing a lot more of this "new" Tupac very soon. According to a Wall Street Journal interview with Ed Ulbrich of Digital Domain Media Group Inc., the visual-effects house responsible for making the rapper's image (as well as the virtual versions of Brad Pitt in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), there are plans to take the 2-D image on tour. (Although 'Pac's ghostly figure has been widely reported as a hologram, Ulbrich told the Journal that its technical description is a 2-D image and not a hologram, which is 3-D.)

Moving forward with discussions of a tour are representatives for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg who, according to a source close to the project, will be meeting to discuss the logistics involved in scheduling a string of performances with the virtual Tupac. The report cites one option would be to tour in stadiums and involve other hip-hop stars like Eminem, 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa. Another option is a limited tour that would only feature Dre, Snoop Dogg and the virtual Tupac in smaller arenas.

"We worked with Dr. Dre on this, and it was Dre's vision to bring this back to life," Nick Smith — president of AV Concepts, the San Diego company that projected and staged the image — exclusively told MTV News on Monday (April 16). "It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life. ... You can take their likenesses and voice and ... take people that haven't done concerts before or perform music they haven't sung and digitally re-create it."

"This is not found footage. This is not archival footage. This is an illusion [and] this is just the beginning," Ulbrich told the Journal. "Dre has a massive vision for this."

Alleged Oakland campus shooter: I'm 'deeply sorry'

Reuters

One Goh is seen in this handout booking photo from the Alameda County Sheriffs Department released to Reuters April 3.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

One Goh, the man charged with killing seven people at the Oikos University Christian college in Oakland, California, has said he is ?deeply sorry? for the families of his victims, in an interview from jail.

?Families are so angry with me,? he told CBS San Francisco at the Santa Rita Jail, Calif. ?(But) if I tell them sorry, it doesn?t bring anybody back.?

Goh, 43, a native of South Korea and former student at the school, has been charged with seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder at the Oikos University ? the deadliest U.S. campus attack since the shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007. He has not yet entered a plea.

Police have said Goh was targeting an administrator who had been involved in his financial dispute with the school.

When he learned she wasn't there, police say, he began shooting in classrooms. Police are also investigating whether Goh might have been seeking multiple targets.

CBS San Francisco reporter Julie Goodrich said that as they spoke, Goh kept his head down. His eyes were bloodshot and at one point he started to cry, she said.

She added that he spoke English clearly, despite accounts in the aftermath of the shootings that he had struggled with the language and was teased because of his lack of fluency.

?I was studying to be a nurse ? but it didn?t happen. It is complicated to explain,? he told her.

Meanwhile, the director of the nursing program at Oikos college, said her students don't want to return to the classroom building where the shootings took place.

Ellen Cervellon said Wednesday that nursing students at Oikos are still traumatized by the April 2 shooting and are looking for a new space off campus to hold classes. Instructors say they are not sure when classes will resume.

Spam Blocker | My Second Salary

Present are there a good e-mail explaining the way you really are a ?super valuable customer? and so, you recruit a outstanding discount ? and lo and behold ? this is a promotion to look at straight into our own retailer to purchase far more stuff and then we could make a lot more quarterly profits and also stakeholders collateral? Don?t you think intriguing the e-mails take up a popping up at the end of each and every month. The actual query I?ve is actually; are I truly a respected buyer when the company also routed in which exact same, actual marketing and advertising and also discount e-mail to in excess of 10 million some other clients? Okay thus you happen to be having a laugh, yet why don?t we just discuss this with regard to 2nd will we all?
Perhaps, this is the whole lot similar to in the event that the light spins off your own family fridge when you close the door. You already know the sunlight transforms off of, if a person click the key that the front door routinely triggers when it?s sealed the lighting within freezer is triggered, so that you suppose you shut the threshold how the light furthermore is triggered. However, you do not know which without a doubt, you only see the regulations of physics, or at least principle legislations associated with science, as well as suppose the sunlight becomes off. You do not know without a doubt your ?dear special respected client,Inch e-mail actually sought out in order to Tens of millions of others in the exact same format, however, you believe that does.
Even so, simply because I?ve unique which i accomplish on the internet, and often get diverse company accounts in a variety of suppliers along with shops from which I order from, I often get the very same e-mail from your very same organization, well, i no more feel that they are transmitting exactly the same e-mail over to everybody. I realize they may be, given that they directed the same an e-mail in my experience two times, and sometimes thrice.
Nonetheless, recently one thing very worthwhile transpired, My partner and i noticed the actual e-mail has been customized to the business model, and the e-mails are not a similar. I was thinking to be able to myself personally that is great the computer systems are becoming better with sizing upward his or her buyer, along with working out what they need, as well as transmitting all of them more of a personalized e-mail. This is a a valuable thing, plus it specially is sensible since it assists in easing unsolicited mail, and only gives you the right information you need or may wish through focused advertising.
Indeed, since pcs recover ? so that as however for the chagrin in the Digital Freedom Foundation ? they get your data from all of the actual internet sites, and only post you precisely what there?s a chance you?re looking for, towards the best of power they have, provided that you?ve placed information on the web that maybe true and proper.
Individually, and possibly just like you, I get sick and tired of certain kinds of junk e-mail including men functionality development, or a particular custom-made bras. Indeed, I don?t contain the initial dilemma, at the very least not really, as a young man, and secondly like a guy, I don?t require a bra, so obviously, a lot more perform should be done, and maybe many of these targeted e-mails pertaining to marketing and advertising will in reality help in reducing the particular non stop onslaught and deluge associated with undesired junk e-mail. Make sure you take into account pretty much everything as well as think onto it.

Holder: Administration will respond to judge in health care case

The Attorney General said the Texas judge who asked for a letter recognizing the court's authority will receive an appropriate reply.

By Carla K. Johnson,?The Associated Press / April 4, 2012

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that the Justice Department will respond "appropriately" to a federal appellate judge in Texas who demanded a letter recognizing federal courts' authority to strike down laws passed by Congress.

Holder spoke a day after 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jerry Smith questioned President Barack Obama's remarks this week about an "unelected" court possibly striking down the president's health care overhaul. Smith, during oral arguments in a separate challenge to the health law, asked the Justice Department for a three-page, single-spaced letter affirming the federal court's authority.

When asked during a Wednesday news conference in Chicago what an appropriate response to Smith would be, Holder said, "I think what the president said a couple of days ago was appropriate. He indicated that we obviously respect the decisions that courts make."

"Under our system of government ... courts have the final say on the constitutionality of statutes," Holder said. "The courts are also fairly deferential when it comes to overturning statutes that the duly elected representatives of the people, Congress, pass."

The White House, meanwhile, struggled for a third day to explain Obama's original remark that a Supreme Court reversal of the case would be "unprecedented."

White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters in Washington that Obama does not regret using that word, and he insisted Obama was not trying to bully the justices by weighing in before the case is decided.

"It's the reverse of intimidation," Carney said during a lengthy defense of Obama's comments. "He's simply making an observation about precedent and the fact that he expects the court to adhere to that precedent."

A reversal would not be unprecedented, even under the very narrow terms Obama and his spokesman later attached to his comments, but it would be very unusual.

Obama had sought to clarify his remarks under questioning at The Associated Press annual meeting on Tuesday. There, Obama said he was referring only to a specific class of constitutional law, and to the pattern of judicial deference to Congress exemplified by the upholding of New Deal legislation in the 1930s.

Carney on Wednesday said Obama's remarks were the object of criticism "only because a handful of people didn't seem to understand what he was referring to."

Carney also repeated Holder's assurance that the Justice Department would comply with the Texas judge's demand for a letter of explanation.

Smith on Tuesday had seemed to take offense to comments Obama made Monday that he didn't believe the Supreme Court would take the "unprecedented" step of overturning a law passed by a strong majority of Congress. He said he wanted reassurance that Holder and the Justice Department recognized judicial authority.

"The letter needs to be at least three pages, single spaced, no less and it needs to be specific. It needs to make specific reference to the president's statements," Smith said during a case brought in part by a spine and joint hospital in East Texas that is challenging the constitutionality of a portion of the health care law.

Smith's office in Houston said Wednesday the judge would not be commenting on the issue because the case before his court still is pending. Smith, a native Texan, was nominated to the appeals court by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the Senate in 1987.

In Chicago, Holder said he's confident the Supreme Court will find the Affordable Care Act constitutional "given the adequate, able representation" the law had during arguments before the justices. He said Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. "did a great job."

Speaking at the same Chicago press conference during a meeting on health care fraud prevention, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said her department is continuing to implement the health care law without contingency plans for a Supreme Court ruling against it.

If the court rules against the law, Sebelius said, "we'll make efforts to deal with that. But at this point, to lay out the range of options and spend a lot of time and energy on what-ifs is not a very productive use of our time."
