Leaving school is a stressful time for teenagers and there are many decisions that lurk ahead. The future can be very unclear especially if you don?t want to move on to university. So what options are available for school leavers in this situation?
1) Apprenticeship
Taking an apprenticeship in a specific trade is a popular method for many school leavers. It provides an income while learning a particular trade such as an electrician, mechanic or part of an office team.
The biggest plus point of apprenticeships is that they allow an individual to learn and develop in a professional environment. Many even offer split weeks with three days on the job and two spend at a learning institution.
It is a great method to make a start in the workplace and learn specific trade skills although initial pay levels are usually not great so it is ideal for patient hard workers.
2) Traveling
In the 21st century, the world has become a much smaller place. A growing number of school leavers are making the decision to travel abroad to work and sample new cultures. Many people tour around various places while some opt to setup a new life.
The benefit is that it allows you to see other parts of the world and learn new skills while traveling. This option will only suit those with a brave streak, with the downside being completely uprooting your life.
3) Get your foot in the door
For many school leavers, developing a steady income is the priority; approach businesses with your CV and attempt to get a job with career progression. Many national companies offer school leavers roles at the base of the employment structure. These commonly take the form of either internships or apprenticeships.
Apprenticeships tend to be more based on learning and developing practical skills, particularly trade skills, whereas internships may be more varied, providing a range of experiences across a business, from HR, to sales, to marketing.
This is a steady, progressive method of developing a career but can take determination and mental strength to impress.
4) Foundation Degree
The decision not to pursue a future at university does not automatically mean an end to further education. Many very successful individuals began their careers with a college foundation degree. They are designed in partnership with universities and successful employers to prepare people with the knowledge and skills for the business world.
This option is ideal because it provides an active platform to employment with relevant businesses locally. It can also allow school under achievers to push on to further studies. Particularly as some colleges, such as OCVC in Oxford who partner with several local universities, offer these degrees within their school campuses, making the transition much easier.
This option would suit those school leavers that want to develop skills and form a career in specific industry or organisation.
5) Go it alone?
There are some people that are destined to be their own boss. With this in mind the final option available is to setup your own business income. The government currently offer various support schemes for new business enterprises and funding is possible.
It means you can reach for the stars and develop your potential through managing your own creation. On the flip side, it can be a huge gamble if you select a bad concept or manage your accounting badly.
Setting up a business is not for everybody, it is ideal for proactive individuals with unique ideas and a strong desire to succeed on their own.
No matter what you decide to do, make sure you research all the options and think long term. What might feel right just now could be just the opposite in ten years. Good luck and make the most of your life!
